KONOVALETS SQUARE Konovalets Square

Lviv 2024
Future Konovalec Space is a symbolic place of remembrance for the great historical figure Yevhen Konovalets, who was forced to leave Ukraine and was destroyed for his social and military-political activities.

He is the founder of the Ukrainian national idea. Therefore, the memorial to Yevhen Konovalets is a place of self-awareness and self-identification for every Ukrainian who is a participant in the struggle for Independence, which continues to this day.

The memorial is a place of honoring the personality of Yevhen Konovalets and a symbol of recognition of his significant contribution to the history and the struggle for the independence of Ukraine. The space attracts the viewer to reflect on the connection between the present and the past, forming historical parallels and emphasizing the relevance of his state-building nationalist ideas. It is a place where one can enter and be surrounded by symbols of the OUN and the values he professed.

The sculptural-architectural composition dedicated to the memory of Yevhen Konovalets is a harmonious part of the architectural space and landscape design of the Konovalec Space square. The memorial space is cubic in shape, harmoniously fitting into the surrounding space of modern architecture. It consists of a portrait silhouette of Yevhen Konovalets, a wall with graphic ornamental images executed in the technique of engraving (patination or stamping), and a symbolic path (road) that has an important function - to invite the viewer to become part of the sculptural installation.

The graphic ornamental composition consists of horizontally mirrored triangles forming diamonds with equilateral crosses enclosed in them, which are a symbol of the Ukrainian army from the times of the Cossacks to the present day. (The symbolism of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also includes a direct equilateral cross). During the Ukrainian-Russian war in Ukraine, the equilateral cross is a symbolic sign of victory.
The graphic ornament is inspired by the style of Ukrainian printed graphics (magazine and book) from the late 19th - early 20th centuries. In particular, by the works of Robert Lisovsky - the creator of the OUN emblem "Trident with Swords." This period saw the active dissemination of samizdat brochures, books, magazines, and postcards among Ukrainians in emigration and in Ukraine, serving as a means of communication for Ukrainian patriotic and nationalist movements in the underground.

This symbolic graphic element also stylistically corresponds with the modernist architecture of the Polytechnic building. The gravestone on the grave of Yevhen Konovalets at the Crooswijk Cemetery in Rotterdam, Netherlands, also takes the form of such a so-called Cossack cross. There is a tradition of installing Cossack crosses at the burials of those who died for Ukraine and in memory of prominent Ukrainians.

The stylistics of the portrait solution are inspired by a graphic postcard from 1948, which was printed to commemorate the 10th anniversary of his death.

Brass was chosen as the main material for the memorial as this metal is resistant to corrosion and can withstand various weather conditions for a long time without losing quality. It also has a noble appearance, adding aesthetic sophistication to the monument. This symbolically refers to the intellectual origin of Yevhen Konovalets and the strength of his beliefs over the years.
